Develop new skills. Soar to great heights. Being a Cub opens up a whole other world. Our Cubs meet on a Thursday evening at 18:15 to 19:45
Cubs are young people aged 8 to 10½ who:
- Master new skills and try new things
- Have fun and go on adventures
- Make friends
- Are curious about the world around them
- Help others and make a difference, in their own communities and beyond
What do Cubs get up to?
Cub Scouts, for children aged 8-10½, dive into a mix of adventure, teamwork, and skill-building activities that challenge and excite. They might go camping, try rock climbing, learn how to cook outdoors, or take on creative projects that earn them badges. Cubs also explore ways to help their communities, discover new hobbies, and develop leadership skills—all while forming strong friendships and having loads of fun. Every activity is designed to help them gain confidence, independence, and skills for life.
Who leads Cubs?
Cub Scouts are led by enthusiastic, trained volunteers who bring the adventure of Scouting to life for young people aged 8-10½. Inspired by The Jungle Book, many Cub activities draw on themes of teamwork, exploration, and friendship. Leaders, often called names from the story like Akela or Bagheera, use the tale’s values to teach important life skills. Whether planning camping trips, helping Cubs earn badges, or organizing games, they create a fun and supportive space for Cubs to grow. With full training and flexible roles, leading Cubs is a rewarding way to inspire the next generation while being part of a dynamic community.
How to join
1st Merton Park is an extremely popular group, this means that lots of young people want to join and you might have to wait for a space to become available before you can start your scouting journey. If you have any questions about accessibility, it’s best to contact us in addition to your application. By being upfront about additional needs from the start, parents/carers can work in partnership with local leaders to make sure their young person has the best experience possible.
