Scouts

Jump in and get muddy. Give back and get set. Scouts ignore the butterflies and go for it! Our Scouts meet on a Wednesday evening at 19:15 to 21:00

Scouts are a go-getting group of young people aged 10 ½ to 14 who:

  • Master new skills and try new things
  • Make new friends
  • Have fun and go on adventures, at home and abroad
  • Explore the world around them
  • Help others and make a difference, in their own communities and beyond

What do Scouts get up to?

Scouts, for young people aged 10½ to 14, take on a world of adventure, challenge, and skill-building. From hiking and camping to pioneering and water sports, Scouts explore the great outdoors and develop practical skills like cooking, navigation, and first aid. They also tackle creative projects, learn about global issues, and contribute to their communities through service activities. Whether working as a team on problem-solving tasks or leading their own projects, Scouts grow in confidence, independence, and leadership—building skills for life while making lasting friendships and unforgettable memories.

Who leads Scouts?

Scouts are led by passionate, trained volunteers who guide young people aged 10½ to 14 through exciting adventures and life-changing experiences. Often referred to as “Skip” (short for Skipper), Scout leaders are role models who encourage independence, teamwork, and leadership. They organize a wide range of activities, from camping and hiking to skill-building workshops and community projects. With full training and a supportive team, Scout leaders create a safe, fun environment where young people can thrive, gain confidence, and build friendships. Being a leader is a rewarding way to make a real difference in the lives of young people while having plenty of fun along the way!

How to join

1st Merton Park is an extremely popular group, this means that lots of young people want to join and you might have to wait for a space to become available before you can start your scouting journey. If you have any questions about accessibility, it’s best to contact us in addition to your application. By being upfront about additional needs from the start, parents/carers can work in partnership with local leaders to make sure their young person has the best experience possible.

Scouting provides a second family to lots of young people. It’s a safe place where they can aspire and grow.'
